NOT ACTUALLY FROM EGYPT, AND NOT HIP HOP
Don't be confused by the name! Obviously, you see a band listed called Egyptian Hip Hop and you probably get an image of a sandy stall laden road in downtown Cairo; the hustle and bustle of locals going about their daily routine, perhaps the occasional Camel, and then a group of young guys stood by the side of the road freestyling to a small stereo? Or was that just me?!
Anyway, these guys aren't Egyptian, and they don't do hip hop. They're four young guys from Manchester. I heard their track, "Rad Pitt" recently and thought I might have stumbled across a rare demo by "The Cure". Not only does frontman, Alexander Hewitt have a similarity to Robert Smith, but instrumentally, there are definite delicate tones drawing you away from the foreground vocal here in a way reminiscent of "Lullaby" or "Close To You"... you'll understand what I mean anyway when you hear this...I hope! There's even a bit of a "Low" era Bowie sound in there.
This kind of sound definitely lends itself to summer, and I can see EHH really getting people talking over the coming months.
Mark Twain commented "Denial aint just a river in Egypt", it could well also be a case of failing to see the merits of Egyptian Hip Hop, but I can't see anyone falling foul of that curse.
